The
Vaults Taken
from The Instistute Of Paranormal Research
Beneath
the busy streets of Edinburgh lies the mysterious ‘Vaults’.
This maze of rooms, under Edinburgh’s South Bridge, one of
the city's main thoroughfares, lay forgotten for centuries until
they were ‘discovered’ in the mid 1980’s and reopened
as a tourist attraction.
But, almost as soon as the public were granted access, tales of
ghostly sightings began to emerge. The rooms themselves had been
used as workshops and living quarters for local tradesman, but the
conditions were, to say the least, unpleasant. Thus only a few short
years after they’d been opened, in 1788, the Vaults were closed,
in the early 1800’s. BY 1790’s it was estimated that
there were more than one hundred businesses active on the South
Bridge, many of which would have used the Vaults as workshops, making
the Vaults a crowded, dirty and smelly place to be. But there is
also a much darker side to the Vaults, for it is rumoured that the
notorious ‘Body snatchers’ Burke and Hare may well have
acquired their ‘goods’ from within the Vaults, and sold
the bodies to the nearby Infirmary Street teaching hospital. Thus
making the South Street Vaults a very interesting place to investigate
.

Blair
Street Vaults
As
the team enter the vaults, David Well picks up on a person sniffing
like a dog and a woman singing, also a man who is not pleasant,
who is waiting for them! New member Geoff Adams on camera describes
himself as nervous and and sensing an atmosphere. While Stuart feels
sick. David continues to say there is a man who is nasty and lives
on 'rubbish'. He also ssenses prostitutes from the late C18th or
early C19th.
David
Wells calls out for tappings and the team seems to hear a response.
David sense a 'pouncer' who may well jump out', he later says he
is debasted and 'the 'low of the low.' A sound of dragging is heard
as David says he is hit by something.
We
are shown balls on shelves that are trigger objects. David says
he senses a child with whooping cough and suggests the team hold
their hands at waist level to see if they get a response.
David
senses the little boy is weak, but the man he senses is aggressive.
he sets a time period for the child as in the late 18th century,
with a religous name.
Yvette
decides to set up a seance, as Ciaran enters with a member of the
audience he advises to carry on and not analyse, commonly given
advice from a parapsychologist.
The
seance brings David the senses the woman died from cuts to her midrif
seeing blood on her belly area , and asks was she experimented on.
(Leasley Smith later suggests this may well have been the attempt
to remove a baby from it's womb.)
Stuart
is still ill at ease and still feeling sick. Does a prescense throw
something at David ? The team report rappings in response to their
questions.
As
the team is rejoined after their seance a candle has been tipped
from the table. Karl has found a cavern above a doorway that Yvette
investigates, in which she and Stuart hear something moving or jumping.
David feels the 'male' is playining mind games and Karl is sure
there are noises behind a padlocked door.
The
investigation leads to the crew hearing footsteps and rattling doors.
David continues his analysis that the woman's body was stolen and
used for experimentaion in a medical room, he puts a date down of
1780's. This falls in line with the information above from the Institute
of Paranormal Research which is easily accessible on the web. Interestingly
Leasley Smith does not pick up on this !
The
male prescence he felt he says 'fell from grace' and has the name
'Johnstone.'
He
later describes the prescence as a 'creature' who is strong in the
room. As Yvettes calls for a response the team report a moan and
chink.
Once
again the team is rejoined, just missing a bottle that has fallen
over on a table 'not' caught on camera.
As
Yvette, Ciaran and David move on concerned Stuart is weakening a
noise of bottles falling is heard. Stuart has felt over come with
rage and thrown Karl towards the table with bottles on it. The viewers
see Karl pinning Stuart against the wall and then he is lead out.
Ciaran and David agree this is uncanny since moments before they
were discussing Stuart was weakening, was the rage in Stuart caused
by a spirit showing its energy ?
Back
in the 'Boots Room' Jon the soundman collapses and Yvette feels
weak in the legs.
Yvette
and Ciaran confere giving the possible reasons as oppression, humidity
or lack of air, it is Ciaran that even says it may be a 'spirit'
influence.
David
Wells stills believes it is a spirit picking off the weak. The crew
exit to leave 'Wiggan' on his own.
Kiddry
Street Vaults
From
the start the team hear a constant knocking, but not inline with
control questioning. The questioning starts but the response does
not seem a pure response.
The
team enter a temple, David Well suggests it may be 'circus' set,
consisting of pillars, wikkan, pagan and witchcraft symbols, but
carries out a a protection ritual.
The
team hear a deep growl, and David senses a female entity, and a
male he describes as lurching and a biggot. In the studio Ciaran
enforces they need positive response to control questions.
The
team are all ill at ease, with Jon picking up noises on the microphone,
the crew seem to think they are from the other side of the wall.
David
picks up on the woman who he thinks was convicted of being a witch
and burnt in her 40's, but was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He suggests she haunts down from the castle to the vaults. The crew
seem convinced the noises they are hearing are responsive from her
to their actions and questions. He gives us the name Balfour
The
tempearture is reported as having dropped, and David reports on
five cloaked figures being present, and a sound of chanting. The
male figure is still present although holding back, David reports
him to be an official figure, a religious figure and gives us the
name 'Clarke.' (Later to be identified as Alexander Clarke.)
The
energy around them David reports to be residual with lots of children.
Two loud bangs
lead David to report an image of the cloven hooved beast, who is
waiting. With Yvettes appeals for more response the crew hear noise
in response and more thrown stones.
Back
in the Studio Leasley Smith gives us ALISON BALFOUR reported as
being burnt at the stake 16 Dec 1594 and her husband beheaded later
in France for witchcraft. again this information seems easily accessible
on the web.
David
has contact with a presecence he later describes as a sad old man,
being something he is not, who dresses up, and places him in the
mid 1600's. Stuart returns to his role of being depressed and affected,
feeling sick and another headache. (A good sponsor would be ANADIN).
A return
after the break gives us Stuart who has been against the wall 'spitting'
and hysterically asks for his top to be removed to reveal scratches
all over his back.David talks of demonic forces which he mocks as
he steps into the ritual circle earlier entered by Karl & Stuart.
during this Jon screams and reveals a fine scalpel like cut on his
leg.
I must
bring forward. Facts revealed Stuart left the room during the break
and returned prior to his injuries. Also we beg to ask how can a
man who condemned Derek Acorah for lack of protection can mock what
he states are demonic forces and treat the circle they all believe
is the source of the actions that have taken place, with such disrespect,
if what has happened is true. Is this not putting the crew at worse
risk than lack of protection? For the first time in covering Most
Haunted I bring forward room for thought and debate. Purely to give
a positive view that we must question what we see, if there is questionable
doubt. David later himself says he has not been
attacked YET, if safety of the crew is his first thought this is
strange line to take.
The
continuation takes us to the newly uncovered Nichol Edward Vaults.
Yvette, Jon, Wiggan, Geoff, Karl and David are the crew. David Wells
begins with talk of layers of bodies and contact still with ' Balfour'.
He reports a weight of a door on top of him and torture. The events
are draining Yvette and she breaks down leading to another break.
Returning
back to the original vaults and the stone ritual circle, Karl and
Jon walk defiantly through while Yvette still seems very ill at
ease. The decision is to hold a seance around the circle and Karl
is defiant he wants norprotection and wants to 'sink the sucker!'
It's 11.35pm and the witching hour beckons.
The
return is short lived and the seance never starts. David call on
protection, Yvette takes on her attack to force the spirits into
action by taunting Clarke. However yells from Jon and the camera
showing a deep cut on his legs ends the investigation.
Was
this a return to Pendle Hill ? The jury is out til tmw.
Mary
Kings Close
Night
three and the team investigate Mary Close Vaults
From
the start the team tell us of tappings from below them on the floorboard.
Yvette is convinced they are positive response to control questions.
When asked how many crew there are they recieved 14 positive knocks.
It is the rapid taps not in answer to questions David Wells is most
concerned about.
David
picks up on a female he calls Bessy, later to be confirmed by him
as Elizabeth Boyde, from the 17th century who cleaned clothes and
died of a disease. Unsurprising as the Close is connected with one
of the many plagues in Edinburgh. David reports he is convinced
Bessy is giving him an astral warning to get out. David also reports
on a roof being put above them. Leasley Smithreports this did happen
later on 1753 so cannot be directly connected to Bessy.
